On a June day in 1905, Independiente's president Aristides Langone attended a football match between the Argentine team Alumni Athletic Club and Nottingham Forest. The British team was only the second English club ever to visit Argentina, playing nine exhibition matches for which they received a total of two hundred pounds from the Argentine federation. The final match, against Alumni Athletic Club, ended with a 6-0 victory for Forest. This performance made such a strong impression on Aristides Langone that he decided his own team, Independiente, would abandon their blue-and-white striped shirts in favor of an all-red kit.
